"Apothecary" is an uncommon word in modern times. But the term "apothecary (a-poth-eh-kari) is deeply rooted in the history of mankind. The term is derived from the Ancient Greek word apothk, meaning a repository or storehouse. An interesting thing about the word "apothecary" is that its meaning is more than just a place; it's also a profession. Like a carpenter works in the construction industry, an apothecary (a person) works in an apothecary (a store).
So what does an apothecary do? Through history, apothecaries have been the dispensaries of medicine and medical materials. Apothecaries were the original version of what today would be called a pharmacy. Apothecaries date back as far as 2600 B.C. to ancient Babylon. Clay tablets have been discovered with medical records, prescriptions, and directions for mixing medicines. An ancient practice indeed!
Apothecary vs. Pharmacy
While the terms "apothecary and "pharmacy" can sometimes be used interchangeably, the modern pharmacy is much different than the modern apothecary. One of the main differences is the types of medicines offered and the way they are produced. Most modern-day apothecaries use alternative and herbal medicinal blends that are produced and blended in-house. as opposed to present-day pharmacies that provide name-brand chemical medications produced by large manufacturers.
Here at Radix Apothecary, a branch of Oak Creek Apple Company, we believe in the wisdom of the ancients paired with modern technology and scientific advances. So many practices go to the extremes of each side of healing—natural vs. allopathic—with staunch views and regimens supporting those views and no room for compromise. One way or the other, black or white,
That is a very limited view of health and recovery. By dogmatizing the material, you are effectively removing 50% or more of the available tools from your wellness toolbox, and that's a shame. Dogma has no place in an honest healing pursuit. There is a thin thread of truth that runs right down the middle of divided views, and that's usually where truth resides - with its neighbors common sense and curiosity. This thin thread is where we live and where our master formulas come from. We are constantly seeking, constantly evolving with the advent of new information, and constantly improving our offerings to you.
